Online Compliance & Disclosures

On This Page

Overview

This page details important information for students enrolling in ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ University’s (a) online and low-residency programs and (b) programs that lead to a state certification or state licensure, regardless of whether or not those programs are online or low-residency.

Professional Licensure & Certification Requirements

ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ University offers a variety of programs specifically designed to prepare graduates for professional licensure or certification within the State of Connecticut. Licensure requirements vary by state, and some may require individuals to complete additional coursework, fieldwork, background checks, individual state licensing exams, specific fees, or other requirements to obtain licensure or certification in that state.

ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ University has not made a determination that its curriculum meets the state educational requirements for licensure or certification in any state outside of Connecticut.

State Authorization

ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ University is a member of the , which allows us to provide online and distance learning programs to residents of states outside of Connecticut. NC-SARA membership, however, does not grant reciprocity or exempt us from state professional licensing or certification requirements. As a result, licensing requirements in Connecticut may not be recognized as sufficient to obtain a license in any other state.

Relocation & Online Programs

Students who begin an online program while residing in a state in which ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ is authorized to offer online programs need to be aware that moving to a state in which the University is not authorized to offer that program may have negative consequences. While the University attempts to obtain authorization everywhere its students live, moving to a state in which the University is not authorized could result in the loss of eligibility for certain forms of financial aid and/or in the inability of the student to complete the academic program.

Relocation & Professional Licensure Programs

ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ University has not made a determination that its curriculum meets the state educational requirements for licensure or certification in any state outside of Connecticut. Students who begin a professional licensure or certification program while residing in a state in which ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ is authorized to offer programs need to be aware that moving to a state in which the University is not authorized to offer that program may have negative consequences. While the University attempts to obtain authorization everywhere its students live, moving to a state in which the University is not authorized could result in the loss of eligibility for certain forms of financial aid, the inability of the student to complete the academic program, or the ability to be licensed and practice within that state.

Students who intend to return or move to any state other than Connecticut need to review the professional licensure disclosures pertaining to their program and consult with the state professional licensing board. The state professional licensing boards make the ultimate decision as to whether or not an individual will be eligible for licensure based on the rules and regulations in place at the time the individual submits their application for licensure.

Criminal Background Checks

Programs that require completion of practicum hours at an approved clinical site may also require criminal background checks, fingerprinting, and/or drug testing prior to clinical placement. Due to individual and/or state requirements for clinical placement approval, students with a criminal background or felony conviction may not be able to secure a practicum site. Failure to complete the required practicum/clinical hours would prevent successful program completion.

Individual state regulations may also prohibit those with a criminal background from obtaining a professional license or make students ineligible to sit for licensing or certification examinations.

International Students

Prior to enrolling in any program at ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ University, prospective students living and/or working outside of the United States should confirm with the appropriate certifying agency whether successful completion of any degree program at ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ University will meet the credentialing requirements of the country in which they intend to seek employment, as to certain types of employment or for advanced/specialized educational programs.

ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ University shall not be held liable if a student is unable to qualify for licensure or certification in any jurisdiction outside of the United States.

Responsibility of Students

Current and prospective students should review with their program advisor the specific academic requirements for the program in which they are enrolling, particularly those related to practicum/internship, as well as pre-qualifications for licensure such as the need for a criminal background check, testing requirements, fees, etc. Current and prospective students should contact the applicable licensure board(s) in their state of residence or in the state where they intend to obtain a license before beginning an academic program that results in licensure and prior to beginning any internship/practicum. Please be advised that national and state laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time. It is the responsibility of the student completing the licensure program to check with the licensing board(s) in their state of residence or in the state in which they intend to obtain a license for the most recent information and requirements.

Complaint Process

In accordance with SARA requirements, complaints should first be registered and addressed through standard ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ University procedures. These can be found under "Student Academic Grievance Procedure" in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs. Concerns related to non-discrimination and harassment should be addressed through the process described in the Student Handbook. If an issue cannot be resolved internally, the party may contact the NC-SARA Connecticut State Portal Entity:

Student Identity Verification

ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ University requires students in online-only and hybrid programs to complete the following steps in order to help the University ensure that the identity of those students admitted and enrolled in distance courses or programs are the same students who participate in and complete those courses or programs for academic credit. Distance courses can be either online-only or hybrid.

Upon admission, all students are issued a unique, official ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ NetID for secure access to University systems and library resources, to register for courses, and to submit academic work via LMS systems like Blackboard. As part of this set-up, the NetID system requires students to create a strong password with the following requirements:

  • The Password is case sensitive.
  • It must be at least 8 characters long.
  • It must be no more than 20 characters long.
  • It must include at least 1 number.
  • It must not include any symbol (non letter or number) characters.
  • It must have at least 1 lowercase letter.
  • It must have at least 1 uppercase letter.
  • It must not include any of the following values: password test
  • It must not include part of your name or user name.
  • It must not include a common word or commonly used sequence of characters.
  • The new password may not have been used previously.

Each NetID password is automatically set to expire every 120 days, before which the user will receive multiple email reminders with the appropriate links to set a new one. Complete details on resetting NetID passwords can be found on the .

Stag Card Process for Students in Online-Only Programs

After students in online-only programs have been issued their NetID, they secure their official ID Card (Stag Card) by completing the steps outlined for Online Program Participants, including completion of the “ID Verification Form.” This form requires students to supply an official, photo ID (i.e., Driver’s License; Passport; Military ID) to a notary public. Students return the notarized form to the Stag Card Office and submit a photo for their Stag Card by following University photo guidelines). The digitized photo is used on the Stag Card and uploaded into the student information system used by faculty and staff.

Stag Card Process for Students in Hybrid Programs

Hybrid programs include online coursework but also have a required place-based experience that may include coming to campus for orientation and some class sessions or specific courses. The MFA in Creative Writing is an example of this program at ÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ. After students in these programs are issued their NetID, they gain access to the learning management system for that program. Within this system, students are required to complete Orientation including the Stag Card module in which they are required to provide a photo (following the University photo guidelines) as well as a color copy of an official government-issued photo ID with an address that matches the address in the student’s University record.

Students in hybrid programs receive their Stag Cards during registration at their first visit to the University’s campus as part of the program. Students are required to present their official government-issued photo ID to verify identity with program staff. Stag Cards are not released to students for whom identity cannot be verified.
